In this same spirit of inquiry, we turn to the episode of Hanuman and the Sanjeevani Mountain. While modern skepticism dismisses it as an impossible fable, the Ramayana provides a level of detail that demands a closer look. It leaves behind a trail of intriguing anomalies that may not prove the story literally but certainly justify an open investigation. This is not about blind faith; it’s about seeking truth.
The world has long dismissed this as a story of impossible strength. Yet the evidence demands we pause. If Hindu cosmology could encode astronomy, geology, and medicine with such precision, why should the Sanjeevani Mountain be cast aside as “myth”?
Textual Foundations of the Sanjeevani Mountain
The Valmiki Ramayana gives us more than a story — it gives us geographical markers. When Lakshmana lay wounded in battle, Hanuman was commanded to fetch the life-giving herb Sanjeevani from the Himalayas. The mountain named is Dronagiri (or Gandhamardan), a herb-bearing peak in today’s Uttarakhand.
Unable to identify the precise herb in the dark of night, Hanuman uprooted the entire mountain fragment and carried it swiftly across the sky to Lanka. This is not a vague fable — Valmiki specifies the lifting of the Sanjeevani Mountain, the herbs it carried, and even the north–south flight path.
Such textual precision is striking. In most global myths, heroes wield generic miracles. In the Ramayana, we find specific flora, mountains, and routes described. This level of detail makes the episode worthy of testing against geography and botany, rather than dismissing it as mere allegory.
Anomalies Around the Sanjeevani Mountain
A Himalayan Plant in Lanka
One of the most intriguing anomalies tied to the Sanjeevani Mountain is the presence of Rhododendron arboreum, a Himalayan tree unexpectedly found in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, especially around Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains. Locals call it “Maha Rathmal.”
Modern botanists confirm this plant’s existence in Sri Lanka, classifying it as the distinct subspecies, zeylanicum. The scientific consensus is that this plant diverged from its Himalayan counterpart over a long period, adapting to the island’s unique montane cloud forests. While this evolutionary timeline complicates the idea of a recent transplant, it presents a profound question: Why would a civilizational memory of a Himalayan plant being moved to Lanka exist, when that very plant exists today as an isolated biological anomaly on the island? This striking coincidence invites further inquiry into the connection between the text and the tangible world.
Odd Mountain Shapes
In Uttarakhand, villagers near Dronagiri Parvat point to its scarred shape, claiming a portion was removed. Meanwhile, in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, certain ridges and outcrops are revered as fragments “brought by Hanuman.” While these may be folk interpretations, the coincidence of both source and destination showing unusual landforms adds weight to the anomaly.
Local Traditions
Even more curious is the tradition at Dronagiri village, where people still refrain from worshipping Hanuman, remembering the Sanjeevani Mountain episode as a disruption of their sacred peak. Such a living cultural memory preserved across centuries cannot be lightly brushed aside.

Science has engaged with parts of this story — though often with a dismissive lens.
- Botany: Modern studies affirm that Rhododendron arboreum exists in Sri Lanka, but classify it as a long-separated subspecies adapted to the island’s montane cloud forests. This implies ancient divergence, not a recent transplant. Yet its ecological “out-of-placeness” in tropical Sri Lanka still raises questions worth exploring.
- The story’s literal interpretation faces a significant challenge from geology. Sri Lanka’s central highlands are composed of ancient Precambrian rock, completely unlike the geologically young formations of the Himalayas. To date, no geological survey has identified a block of Himalayan rock in Sri Lanka. This suggests that the story of Hanuman moving the ‘entire mountain’ may be a literary overstatement or a metaphor. Rather than a simple refutation, this discrepancy pushes us to a deeper understanding of itihasa—as a form of historical memory that may not always be literal but still contains a kernel of truth.
- Pollen and Sediment Cores: Long-term cores from Horton Plains show continuous montane vegetation and endemic species for thousands of years, without sudden intrusion of Himalayan pollen types. This suggests Sri Lanka’s flora evolved in place — but pollen studies may miss localized anomalies or rare introductions.
- Soil and Microbiome: To date, there has been no systematic comparison of soil DNA, microbial communities, or isotopic profiles between Uttarakhand’s Dronagiri and Sri Lanka’s highlands. This is the very gap where benefit of doubt lives: science has not closed the case, because it has not been fully tested.
Anomalies Around the Sanjeevani Mountain
Skepticism does not mean rejection. It means holding the question open. As seekers, we must avoid both extremes — blind belief and premature dismissal.

On the other side, popular devotion sometimes insists the event must be literal in every detail. Yet even here, questions remain: why does Rhododendron arboreum in Sri Lanka show distinct evolutionary traits? Why does geology not reveal younger Himalayan rock signatures?
The middle ground is the Hindu path of satya-anveṣaṇa — truth-seeking through open inquiry. The anomalies are undeniable — a Himalayan plant thriving in Sri Lanka, mountains scarred in ways local memory links to Hanuman, and living traditions that preserve the disruption. They align too precisely with the Ramayana’s narrative to dismiss. Unlike faith traditions elsewhere that demand belief without a single mountain, plant, or cultural memory to test, here we find tangible clues. They may not yet prove the Sanjeevani Mountain episode historically, but they justify granting the benefit of doubt and pursuing deeper study.
The distinction here is not between myth and reality, but between two forms of memory. Some faith traditions narrate events that are fundamentally beyond the scope of physical evidence—miracles like a bodily ascension into heaven or a resurrection. These events, by their nature, cannot be validated by a plant, a mountain, or a soil sample. In contrast, the Ramayana’s account of the Sanjeevani Mountain leaves behind a trail of tangible clues. It gives us specific names, herbs, geographies, and cultural memories that exist in the physical world. This difference makes the story not a matter of blind faith but a compelling civilizational memory that invites scientific inquiry.
Why Hindus Must Study the Sanjeevani Mountain
If Hanuman’s story is to be studied seriously, Hindus themselves must lead the investigation. For too long, our heritage has been tested under alien frameworks, with pre-set conclusions. A dharmic inquiry would differ in both spirit and method:
- Interdisciplinary Teams
Sanskrit scholars working alongside botanists, geologists, archaeologists, and soil microbiologists. The Ramayana’s verses would not be treated as “myth,” but as data points for guiding field research. - Scientific Methods Applied with Respect

Such an approach reflects the essence of Hindu dharma: śraddhā (faithful attention) balanced with jñāna (rigorous knowledge). The story of Hanuman carrying the Sanjeevani Mountain need not be dismissed as fantasy — it deserves the same respect and scrutiny that the world gave to Troy or clung to blindly as dogma. It offers a clear, testable, and falsifiable proposition: are there specific, out-of-place biological and cultural markers that align with the text? The answer is yes. This makes the story not just a tale of strength, but a compelling civilizational memory that invites scientific inquiry.
The search for truth about Hanuman’s Mountain is a civilizational responsibility. It’s time for Hindus to move beyond blind dismissal and reactive defense, and to lead an honest inquiry into our own heritage.
This pursuit of truth, however, is a uniquely Hindu endeavor because we understand that truth is never absolute, except for the one Absolute Truth. In the realm of relative reality, all things are subject to change and inquiry. The earth rotates, mountains may or may not be moved, and stories can be tested. Yet, behind all of this lies a single, undeniable truth: that which is born, dies. This is the absolute truth, a principle that remains constant regardless of our investigations.
The story of the Sanjeevani Mountain, therefore, teaches us a dual lesson: to be unflinching in our inquiry into the relative truths of our heritage, and to remain ever mindful of the one, unchanging Absolute Truth that guides us all.
