The Stated Case for Striking Iran — Examined Against America’s Own Record

West Asia War Ethics: The Menu of Justifications

West Asia War Ethics: The Iran war was sold on democracy, human rights and nuclear threat. Each justification fails its own test.

When the United States and Israel struck Iran on February 28, 2026, Washington offered the world a menu of justifications. Democracy under threat. Human rights violated. Nuclear ambitions unchecked. Terrorism exported. A rules-based order defended. These are not new ingredients — they are the same menu served before every American military intervention since the Cold War. West Asia War Ethics demands a simple test: hold each justification against America’s own record and its choice of allies. What survives that test is the true motive. What does not survive is pretext.

This blog examines the ethical case. The next examines what remains when it collapses.

West Asia War Ethics: Democracy

Democracy in Iran had already been undermined decades earlier. In 1953, the United States and the United Kingdom backed a covert operation that removed Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and restored the Shah’s authority, a move widely understood to have been driven in part by Western concerns over control of Iranian oil. Iran’s 1979 revolution, whatever its excesses, introduced something the Gulf monarchies have never attempted — elections. Imperfect, constrained by the clerical establishment — but elections. Iranians voted for their president. Gulf rulers inherit their thrones.

Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy with no elected legislature. The UAE is a federation of hereditary rulers. Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain — the same. Every one of these states is an American strategic partner, arms client, and host to US military bases. If West Asia War Ethics were genuinely grounded in democracy, the geography of American alliances makes no sense. The only state in the Gulf region that holds competitive national elections is the one America went to war with.

Egypt provides the sharpest illustration. The 2011 Arab Spring produced genuinely free elections. Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood won. By 2013, General Sisi had seized power in a military coup — and Washington continued military aid without interruption. Democracy promotion in Egypt ended the moment the democratic result was inconvenient. Demolished.

West Asia War Ethics: Human Rights

China has detained over a million Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang. The United Nations concluded that serious human rights violations had been committed in Xinjiang, possibly amounting to international crimes against humanity. No American military action followed. North Korea starves and brutalises its population across generations. No strikes. Myanmar conducted a documented campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya. No intervention.

Allegations of discrimination against Hindu minorities have also surfaced in neighbouring Bangladesh, particularly after political transitions in recent years. Yet these issues have not triggered international sanctions or military responses, further highlighting how human rights enforcement in global politics often remains selective.

Pakistan systematically persecutes Ahmadiyya Muslims, enforces blasphemy laws that result in mob killings, and received over thirty-two billion dollars in direct US aid while clandestinely empowering the very terrorist forces it was supposed to be fighting. The selection of which human rights violations trigger military action is not random — it follows a pattern. Nations with oil Washington cannot control face action. Nations strategically useful regardless of their human rights record face nothing. Demolished.

West Asia War Ethics: Terrorism

Iran funds proxies — Hezbollah, the Houthis, Hamas-aligned groups. This is documented and acknowledged. But apply the same standard across America’s allies and the terrorism justification for West Asia War Ethics collapses entirely.

Pakistan is the world’s most consequential exporter of terrorist infrastructure. The Taliban was created, trained, and funded with Pakistani state support. Al-Qaeda found sanctuary in Pakistan. Pakistan received the largest share of post-9/11 US military funding — nearly five billion dollars in Coalition Support Funds — despite the State Department’s own conclusion that Pakistan remained a major source of Islamic extremism and a safe haven for top terrorist leaders.

Osama bin Laden — who killed three thousand Americans on September 11, 2001 — lived in a compound in Abbottabad, a garrison town housing Pakistan’s military academy, for years before US forces killed him there. Congressional testimony called Pakistan unequivocally a foe — a state sponsor of terror whose intelligence service, the ISI, supported the Haqqani Network, which a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs described as a virtual arm of that same agency. Pakistan has never faced American military action for any of this. Iran funds proxies and gets struck. Pakistan builds the organisations that kill Americans and gets aid. Demolished.

Then there is the case that requires no elaboration. Ahmed al-Sharaa — until late 2024 known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani — was sent by al-Qaeda’s central command to establish its mission in Syria, founded the al-Nusra Front as an official al-Qaeda affiliate, and spent years as a US-designated terrorist with a ten million dollar bounty on his head. In December 2024, his forces helped topple Bashar al-Assad after years of civil war. By January 2025 he was president of Syria. By November 10, 2025, Trump received him in the Oval Office and posted on Truth Social that it was an honour to spend time with the new Syrian president — a man who, twelve months earlier, had a ten million dollar price on his head. Demolished beyond recovery.

West Asia War Ethics: The Track Record of Interventions

The West Asia War Ethics examination must also assess America’s track record. What follows is not opinion — it is a sequence of documented outcomes revealing a progressive erosion of legal constraint with each successive operation.

Afghanistan — the invasion had UN Security Council backing following September 11. The stated goal was to eliminate al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban. Twenty years and over three trillion dollars later, the Taliban governs Afghanistan again, ISIS-Khorasan conducts regular attacks, and al-Qaeda affiliates operate across the region. The mission’s stated objective was not achieved.

Iraq 2003 — the invasion proceeded without UN Security Council authorisation after France and Russia signalled a veto. The Chilcot Inquiry concluded in 2016 that at the time of the invasion Saddam Hussein posed no urgent or imminent threat, that peaceful alternatives had not been exhausted, that the intelligence on weapons of mass destruction was presented with a certainty that was not justified, and that the legal basis for military action was far from satisfactory. The CIA’s Iraq Survey Group formally concluded that Iraq possessed no stockpiles of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons and had not begun any programme to produce them. Not reduced. Not destroyed. Not found. The intelligence basis later collapsed.

Libya 2011 — NATO acted under UN Security Council Resolution 1973, which authorised a no-fly zone to protect civilians. It did not authorise regime change. NATO conducted a campaign that resulted in Muammar Gaddafi’s killing and the collapse of the Libyan state. Libya has remained a failed state divided between competing militias and rival governments ever since. The mandate was exceeded. The outcome was permanent chaos.

Kosovo 1999 — NATO conducted its air campaign against Yugoslavia without UN Security Council authorisation, blocked by Russia and China. It established the precedent that Western military coalitions could act without a UN mandate when they deemed it necessary. Every subsequent legally questionable intervention cited Kosovo as justification. The media framework that sold Kosovo — humanitarian catastrophe, evil strongman, Western reluctance — became the reusable template.

Venezuela — no UN mandate, no military strikes, but the full apparatus of economic warfare applied against a nation whose oil reserves were nationalised under a government Washington refused to accept. Sanctions, asset freezes, recognition of a parallel government, active support for regime change. The stated reasons were democracy and narco-trafficking. Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves.

Iran 2026 — the most legally indefensible. Struck in the middle of active indirect nuclear negotiations in Muscat and Geneva. Struck immediately after the June 2025 twelve-day war that Washington claimed had obliterated Iran’s critical nuclear infrastructure. If the infrastructure was obliterated, what remained to justify a second, far larger strike? Struck without United Nations Security Council authorisation and executed as a covert mission unknown to most American legislators beforehand. Struck while diplomats were still talking. The Mandate Progression is complete: UN mandate — exceeded mandate — no mandate — economic warfare — struck mid-negotiation.

The Verdict on West Asia War Ethics

The West Asia War Ethics examination produces a clear result. Democracy — demolished by the geography of American alliances and the Egypt precedent. Human rights — demolished by selective enforcement that ignores Xinjiang, North Korea, Myanmar, and Pakistan while targeting Iran. Terrorism — demolished by Pakistan’s record, the Abbottabad precedent, and the Jolani White House visit. The intervention track record — a six-step arc from legal mandate to striking mid-negotiation, each step less constrained than the last.

One justification carries partial validity: the nuclear threat. Iran was approaching breakout capacity, and the International Atomic Energy Agency had documented enrichment levels nearing weapons grade. Questions about the Agency’s political pressures and selectivity have often been raised, but the nuclear concern itself cannot simply be dismissed. Yet this justification must also be weighed against America’s own record: the world’s largest nuclear arsenal, the only country ever to use nuclear weapons against another nation eight decades ago, its role in enabling Pakistan’s nuclear programme, its long-standing silence regarding Israel’s undeclared nuclear capability, and its negotiations with North Korea after that state openly crossed the nuclear threshold. Whether the nuclear justification survives the same West Asia War Ethics test will be examined in the next analysis.

And when it too is placed on the scale, what remains standing is a single motive that the ethical arguments were designed to conceal.

Glossary of Terms

1. HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham): Syrian Islamist militant organisation that led the December 2024 offensive toppling Bashar al-Assad. Founded as Jabhat al-Nusra — al-Qaeda’s official Syrian affiliate — by Ahmed al-Sharaa, then known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani. Designated a terrorist organisation by the United States. Al-Sharaa himself carried a ten million dollar US bounty until December 2024. He was appointed Syria’s interim president in January 2025 and received at the White House by Trump on November 10, 2025.
2. Chilcot Inquiry: The UK public inquiry into the 2003 Iraq War, published in 2016 after seven years of investigation. The intelligence on weapons of mass destruction was presented with a certainty that was not justified.
3. FATF (Financial Action Task Force): The international body that monitors and combats money laundering and terrorist financing. Nations placed on its grey or black lists face international financial restrictions. Pakistan’s repeated placement on and removal from the grey list has been a subject of geopolitical pressure and negotiation, used as leverage by Washington to manage Pakistani cooperation.
4. Mandate Progression: The arc across successive US-led military interventions showing progressive erosion of legal constraint — Afghanistan (UN mandate), Iraq (no UN mandate, fabricated WMD pretext), Libya (UN mandate exceeded for regime change), Kosovo (no mandate, precedent set), Venezuela (economic warfare without mandate), Iran 2026 (struck without mandate, mid-negotiation). Each step less legally constrained than the last.
5. Coalition Support Funds: A US Defense Department programme created after September 11, 2001, to reimburse key allies for expenses incurred supporting American counterterrorism operations. Pakistan received nearly five billion dollars — eighty-one percent of all Coalition Support Funds disbursed globally — despite documented continuation of Pakistani state support for terrorist groups targeting US and allied forces in Afghanistan.
