Part 13 of the West Asia’s Endless War Series
Compound Disruption — When the Tariff War and the Energy War Hit the Same System Simultaneously
Chokehold Industrial Chain: The Story
This series has traced the war’s trigger, escalation mechanics, ethical and nuclear pretexts, the fracture of Islamic solidarity, competing narrative wars, Israel’s survival calculus, the Global South’s reading of the strikes as resource imperialism, the oil economics of the Hormuz chokehold as a selective access weapon, and the food security crisis across three simultaneous fertiliser chains. This blog, Chokehold Industrial Chain, reaches the industrial layer — where the same 21 nautical miles that disrupted energy and food supply chains now threatens semiconductor fabrication, aluminium production, and the petrochemical base of virtually every manufactured good on earth.
Chokehold Industrial Chain: Two Shocks, One System
This series has traced the war’s trigger, escalation mechanics, ethical and nuclear pretexts, the fracture of Islamic solidarity, competing narrative wars, Israel’s survival calculus, the Global South’s reading of the strikes as resource imperialism, the oil economics of the Hormuz chokehold as a selective access weapon, and the food security crisis across three simultaneous fertiliser chains. Blog 13 reaches the industrial layer — where the same 21 nautical miles that disrupted energy and food supply chains now threatens semiconductor fabrication, aluminium production, and the petrochemical base of virtually every manufactured good on earth.
Chokehold Industrial Chain: Helium, aluminium, and petrochemicals — the Hormuz closure hits every advanced supply chain at once. The framing of the 2026 Hormuz disruption as an energy crisis understates the industrial damage by a significant margin. The energy shock is the first disruption hitting global manufacturing supply chains. The second was already underway before the first missile landed. Trump’s tariff war had been reshaping supply chain geography for months — forcing reshoring decisions, accelerating China decoupling, pressuring TSMC toward US fabrication, disrupting component flows across automotive, electronics, and consumer goods. The Hormuz closure did not arrive into a stable industrial system. It arrived into a system already under structural stress. The Chokehold Industrial Chain argument is about compound disruption: two independent shocks, from different directions, hitting the same pre-stressed system simultaneously.
Helium: The Hidden Chokehold on the AI Economy
Qatar produces approximately 36% of the world’s commercial helium supply — the largest share outside the United States. Helium is extracted as a byproduct of Qatar’s natural gas processing at Ras Laffan. When LNG production halts, helium production halts with it. When Hormuz closes, the cryogenic containers carrying liquid helium — each holding 11,000 gallons, each costing approximately $1 million, each capable of holding helium for only 35 to 48 days before it warms and escapes — cannot exit the Gulf. Approximately 200 of these containers are currently stranded in the region. Spot helium prices have risen 70 to 100% since the closure began.
The industrial significance of this shortage is not about party balloons. Semiconductors have overtaken MRI scanners as the largest consumer of helium globally. In advanced chip fabrication, helium is used hundreds of times per wafer during the etching process — blown across the back of silicon wafers to control temperature with precision that cannot vary between cycles. An advanced AI chip can require tens of billions of transistors etched with extreme dimensional accuracy. Helium is the thermal management medium that makes this precision possible. There is no substitute that can be deployed at scale within any timeframe relevant to the current crisis. South Korea sourced 55% of its helium from the GCC in 2025. Taiwan sourced 69% from the GCC in 2024. South Korea hosts Samsung. Taiwan hosts TSMC. Together these two facilities account for the overwhelming majority of leading-edge logic chip fabrication at advanced nodes — including the processors that power AI training and inference at scale. Both are now operating under helium supply pressure from the same strait closure that is simultaneously disrupting their energy supply and activating Korean Peninsula military risk.
The US and Canada have helium production capacity that could theoretically expand. Ramping up extraction and refinery capacity takes years, not weeks. For the immediate crisis, there is no alternative supply chain to activate. The Chokehold Industrial Chain on helium is a hard constraint, not a procurement problem.
📌 The Energy Chokehold That Feeds This Crisis
The industrial disruption is downstream of the oil and LNG closure. Read how the Hormuz chokehold functions as Trump’s selective access weapon before it reaches the factory floor.
Aluminium and Petrochemicals: The Broader Industrial Strike
Helium receives attention because of its semiconductor connection. Two further commodity streams through Hormuz receive less coverage but carry comparable industrial weight.
The Middle East accounted for approximately 21% of global unwrought aluminium imports and 13% of wrought aluminium imports in 2025 — shares that have been rising as UAE smelting capacity expanded at Jebel Ali. Aluminium is a primary input for automotive manufacturing, aerospace, construction, packaging, and consumer electronics. It cannot be stockpiled in the volumes required to buffer a multi-month supply disruption. Price increases from aluminium supply constraints translate directly and quickly into costs across every sector that uses the metal — which is most of modern manufacturing.
Petrochemicals add the widest reach of all. Approximately 85% of Middle East polyethylene exports transit Hormuz. Polyethylene is the foundational feedstock for plastic packaging, medical devices, automotive components, synthetic textiles, and consumer goods across virtually every category. The Asian garment industry depends on petrochemical inputs shipped through the strait for synthetic fabrics. Pharmaceutical packaging — blister packs, IV bags, sterile containers — runs on petrochemical derivatives. Every manufactured good that uses plastic in any form carries a Hormuz exposure that most supply chain managers had never modelled as a primary risk scenario.
Chokehold Industrial Chain: The Convergence Node
The semiconductor supply chain is the point where every thread of the Chokehold Industrial Chain converges. TSMC in Taiwan, Samsung in South Korea, and ASML in the Netherlands — the three nodes that make advanced chip fabrication possible — are each simultaneously exposed to the following pressures as of March 2026: Hormuz energy shock raising input costs; helium shortage degrading fabrication precision and yield; Korean Peninsula military risk activated by Washington’s naval deployment demand; Trump tariff pressure on exports and component imports; and the pre-existing China decoupling stress that had already forced capital allocation decisions across the entire supply chain before the war began.
No semiconductor supply chain was designed to absorb five simultaneous independent disruptions. Just-in-time manufacturing — the lean inventory discipline that made global supply chains efficient for three decades — has zero buffer for compound simultaneous shocks. The Global South reads the resulting price inflation across electronics, vehicles, and consumer goods as another downstream consequence of a war launched from Gulf bases without consultation with the majority of the world’s states. The causal sequence from Hormuz closure to industrial input costs is documented. Whether Washington bears responsibility for the downstream effects of a war it initiated is the question Blog 14 examines directly.
The Trump Unpredictability Premium
There is a fifth disruption layered on top of the four physical ones: the unpredictability premium. A sanctions waiver granted today can be revoked next week. A naval coalition exemption offered to India this month can be withdrawn if New Delhi does not align on a separate trade demand. This unpredictability is not a failure of Trump’s strategy. As established in Blog 11, disruption serves his leverage as well as flow does.
But for industrial supply chain managers, unpredictability has a direct cost that compounds the physical disruptions. When the duration and terms of a chokehold cannot be modelled, manufacturers hold excess inventory as insurance. Excess inventory is capital tied up rather than invested. Across every industry simultaneously building precautionary stock — semiconductors, automotive, pharmaceuticals, consumer electronics — the aggregate effect is deflationary for industrial investment and inflationary for consumer prices. The Chokehold Industrial Chain does not need to physically stop production to damage the global industrial economy. The uncertainty alone is sufficient to reshape capital allocation decisions well beyond the duration of the physical closure — as the post-COVID supply chain reconfiguration demonstrated, where inventory and sourcing decisions made during a crisis took years to unwind.
📌 The Food Crisis Upstream of This One
The industrial chain disruption shares its upstream inputs — sulphur, gas, petrochemicals — with the food security crisis. Both are downstream of the same 21 nautical miles.
Next: Responsibility Blockade — Blog 14 in West Asia’s Endless War examines who bears legal and moral responsibility for a closure that is simultaneously Iran’s asymmetric response to decapitation and Washington’s instrument of bilateral leverage.

Glossary of Terms
- Strait of Hormuz: The thirty-three-kilometre waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman through which approximately twenty percent of global seaborne oil trade passes daily.
- LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas): Natural gas cooled to liquid form for tanker transport. Twenty-five to thirty percent of global LNG trade transits the Strait of Hormuz.
- GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council): The six-state economic and political bloc — Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman. Generated approximately $561 billion in oil revenue in 2024, the majority Hormuz-dependent. Four of the six members have zero pipeline bypass capacity outside the strait.
- Chokehold Oil Economics: The strategic use of Strait of Hormuz access as a selective weapon by an actor who does not personally depend on the strait — generating maximum leverage over energy-dependent competitors at zero domestic cost.
- Chokehold Food Security: The mechanism by which the Hormuz closure converts into a food crisis — disrupting three supply chains simultaneously: nitrogen fertiliser (via LNG), phosphate fertiliser (via sulphur), and household cooking fuel (via LPG).
- Resource Imperialism: The analytical framework in which military interventions, sanctions regimes, and regime change operations are understood primarily as mechanisms for securing access to strategic natural resources or eliminating governments that threaten to trade those resources outside the dollar-denominated financial system.
- Naval Coalition at Hormuz: The US-led coalition of naval forces assembled at the Strait of Hormuz following the February 28 2026 strikes on Iran. India declined to join despite direct American pressure.
- Chokehold Industrial Chain: The mechanism by which the Hormuz closure converts into an industrial supply chain crisis — simultaneously disrupting helium supply for semiconductor fabrication, aluminium supply for manufacturing, and polyethylene supply for every product category using plastic.
- Compound Disruption: The simultaneous arrival of two or more independent supply chain shocks — in the 2026 context, Trump’s tariff war reshaping supply chain geography combined with the Hormuz energy closure — hitting a pre-stressed industrial system with no buffer designed for simultaneous independent disruptions.
- Just-in-Time Manufacturing: The lean inventory management discipline — holding minimal stock and relying on precise supply chain timing to deliver inputs exactly when needed. Efficient under stable conditions; has zero buffer for compound simultaneous shocks. The dominant industrial model disrupted by both the COVID supply chain crisis and the 2026 Hormuz closure.
- Unpredictability Premium: The additional cost imposed on industrial supply chains by policy unpredictability — when sanctions waivers, tariff rates, or coalition exemptions can be granted and revoked arbitrarily, manufacturers build precautionary inventory stock. The aggregate capital cost of precautionary inventory across all affected industries is deflationary for investment and inflationary for consumer prices.
- Helium (Industrial): A cryogenic inert gas used in semiconductor fabrication for thermal management during wafer etching — blown across silicon wafer backs to maintain precise temperature control. No substitute deployable at scale. Qatar produces approximately 36% of global commercial supply, extracted as a byproduct of LNG processing at Ras Laffan.
- Polyethylene: The world’s most widely produced plastic — the foundational petrochemical feedstock for plastic packaging, medical devices, automotive components, synthetic textiles, and consumer goods. Approximately 85% of Middle East polyethylene exports transit Hormuz. Every manufactured good using plastic carries indirect Hormuz exposure through the polyethylene supply chain.
- TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company): The world’s largest contract chipmaker — headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Manufactures the majority of leading-edge logic chips globally including processors for AI training, smartphones, and data centres. Sources approximately 69% of its helium supply from GCC states. Simultaneously exposed to Hormuz energy, helium, and China geopolitical risk in 2026.
- ASML: Dutch semiconductor equipment company — the sole manufacturer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines essential for advanced chip fabrication at sub-7nm nodes. A convergence node in the Chokehold Industrial Chain — its customers TSMC and Samsung are both simultaneously under Hormuz supply and helium pressure.
- Samsung Semiconductor: South Korea’s leading chipmaker — a major manufacturer of memory chips (DRAM, NAND flash) and advanced logic chips. Sources approximately 55% of its helium supply from GCC states. Simultaneously exposed to Hormuz energy shock, helium shortage, and Korean Peninsula military risk activated by Washington’s naval deployment demand.
- Ras Laffan: Qatar’s industrial city on the northeast coast — the world’s largest LNG export hub and the site of Qatar’s helium extraction and processing operations. Hormuz closure makes Ras Laffan’s output unreachable by global markets, simultaneously cutting LNG and helium supply chains.
- Jebel Ali: The UAE’s primary industrial port and free zone south of Dubai — home to significant aluminium smelting capacity that supplies global manufacturing. Hormuz closure strands Jebel Ali’s aluminium output inside the Persian Gulf with no alternative export route.
- Helium Supply Chain: The global distribution network for industrial helium — a finite, non-renewable resource primarily extracted as a byproduct of natural gas processing. Qatar’s Ras Laffan operations represent approximately 36% of global commercial supply. Liquid helium cryogenic containers hold product for only 35–48 days; stranded containers represent permanent supply loss, not delay.
